The past year has been a year of many changes and challenges, with industry upheavals through tech layoffs and perpetual generative AI hype against the backdrop of societal and political upheavals globally. The effects are amplified when kids are in the mix. Within this context, games continue to be built and, grow in care of the kids in our lives and connected through our games. We want to attend to the needs of kids in and around games, but also want to check in on how we are doing. Ultimately, devs and kids are all interconnected. In this roundtable session, we co-develop an RPG skill tree based on the socioecological model to reflect on connecting with and attend to self, our interpersonal relationships, our organizations/companies, and the broader dev community. Participants are asked to share experiences and discuss strategies for levelling up skills in these various areas. Finally, participants are invited to join the Devs with Kids Discord server to stay connected throughout the year.
Participants in this roundtable session will have opportunities to share their own experiences and hear from others in similar situations. They will benefit from a conversation that puts experiences of the past year into perspective and takes a systems thinking view of skill and strategy development in response.
All are welcome, but the conversation will be most useful to those who are trying to balance professional responsibilities with caring for the kids in their life.
