Frank Keienburg, General Manager for 'Brawl Stars' and Frank Yan, Game Designer of 'Brawl Stars' discusses the process of removing lootboxes from Brawl Stars entirely and how the game became less engaging as a result. They cover what they did in the year since and the subsequent results, speaking to the impact of randomized rewards for the game as well as how they analyze what's right for the game using a combination of community sentiment, data, and designer intuition.
This talk will provide learnings for the role of randomized rewards, how they removed these rewards from 'Brawl Stars', and why they decided to add them back as engagement-based rewards in the year following. This should serve as a reference point for others considering the use of them for their games.
For anyone considering reasons to add random rewards into their game and when to use them vs. deterministic rewards. This talk should serve as a reference point for developers and designers and walks through the process of how the speakers removed Loot Boxes from 'Brawl Stars' and how they redesigned them to be added back into the game subsequently.
